Simulation & design overview

The simulation and design activities of the Korvink group

Vision

I believe that we can bring design and manufacturing intimately together, thereby placing manufacturable design methodology at the hands of every small company, much in the way that the almost omnipresent SPICE circuit simulation software makes designers think that they are dealing with real circuits.

I want to change MEMS product development. Imagine designers playfully tugging at virtual objects which evolve before their eyes into the best possible configuration, suitable for direct rapid prototyping, then seamlessly the product emerges from a desktop factory, in a process that can be ramped up to production levels.

Our research focuses on building simulation tools in support of engineering design. The process simulation activities address challenges in predicting the outcome of MEMS manufacturing methods - here we look at injection moulding, casting, and inkjetting. Device simulation tools predict the operating behaviour of single MEMS building blocks, such as carbon nanotube devices, or elecrowetting lab-on-a-chip building blocks. Optimization methods support the synthesis of new designs based on a forward simulation and a performance target. Model order reduction is a means to achieve compact system level models, or indeed to simply speed up simulation programs, even optimization.
